Glass Revolution Travelled to Amrut Distilleries in India
Before the world changed in March of 2020, a few members of our team at Glass Revolution were able to visit Amrut Distilleries. Two of our top performing distributors flew all the way to Bengaluru, India to visit the magical land of Indian whisky at Amrut. Joining them were Ryan Caswell from Opici in New Jersey and Victoria Garcia from Victory in Texas. While there, they had the opportunity to experience the making of Amrut’s fine whiskies and rums in person. In addition, they were even able to select some incredible whiskies to bring to the American market.
About Amrut Distilleries
The word Amrut means “immortality” in Sanskrit and in ancient Indian text means “nectar”. Therefore, this word can translate easily into the phrase “nectar of the gods”, “nectar of life”, or “drink of the gods”. Amrut Distillery made its first rum in 1950 and debuted its first whisky over 50 years later in August of 2004 in Scotland. Since hitting the whisky game, Amrut has become one of the top selling Indian whiskies throughout the globe. Throughout the years they have truly lived up to their name.
Being located in India has added incredibly unique qualities to Amrut’s whisky. One of the main factors differentiating it from other whiskies is that their climate is known for its fierce sun and low humidity. Scotland on the other hand has a cool and wet climate. Why does this matter to whisky? Because as the spirit is aging in the barrel, some of the liquid is lost through evaporation. This is known as the “angels share”. India’s climate accelerates the speed of evaporation. Therefore, Amrut’s average loss is 5-6 times higher than the loss at Scottish whisky distilleries. With an extremely quick evaporation rate, Amrut’s whisky can become incredibly complex in only a few short years.
What the distributors experienced at Amrut
While in India, the distributors were able to enjoy an in-depth distillery tour and had the ultimate opportunity to select their own cask. Following an intense blind tasting, Victoria selected case #5148- matured in an ex-Caroni rum cask for 5 years. Ryan selected cask #707, an ex-Amrut rye cask matured for almost 5 years. Each cask yielded 120 bottles and the spirits are divine. Keep an eye out as these limited releases will be available in early November!
